Hopefully someone can help, I'm just programming the x32 with the s16's for a gig this weekend,
Using 30 channels fed from the s16's, and was hoping to plug two audience mics directly plugged in via xlrs in to the x32 for the recording.
I thought there way a way to change individual channels to be sourced from the onboard xlrs rather, then in the group of 8 channels, however I think I may have imagined been able to do that.
Is there any way around this like using the p16 routing screen like you can use to get around other limitations?
Or do I just have to run two long xlrs from the stage back out to the audience?
Sorry if its a daft question, but completely lost on how to do this if. It's possible..
If you are not needing the first four 1/4" AUX inputs on the X32, you can do this by selecting "Local 1-4" for Aux 1-4 on the "Home" page of the ROUTING menu.
The first four mic preamps on the X32 would then appear on the 3rd input layer on the first four Aux inputs. With this configuration, you can use 36 mic pres at mix.
The XUF Firewire Card has 32 outputs, so if you want to record these signals as part of a multitrack recording, you will need to assign them to outputs and then assign those outputs to a bank of card outputs. I would use the P16 outputs as you suggest above. Assign "dir out aux 1" and "dir out aux 2" to the first two outputs on the "p16 out" tab of the ROUTING menu, remember to choose the tap point that you want. You can assign direct outs from any six of your 32 input channels to the next 6 P16 outputs so that the bank of 8 is not used on only the two local mics. Finally, assign "P16 1-8" to a bank of outputs on the "Card Out" tab.

Is the purpose of the audience mics recording the applause? Then you might want to setup the mics near the stage because of the delay you would get in the recorded audience signal (~3ms/m). You would have to correct this when mixing/mastering the recording.

Good point Peter, was aiming of having the mics towards the middle rows of the audience, as the stage is set further back, so the cable route is quicker to the desk then the s16's on stage. But haven't thought about delay.
Micing the audience from the stage looking out is a trick I learned from the late Roger Nichols. I guess he did it a lot with Steely Dan!
