    BEHRINGER Tech Talk #01: S16 and X32

    Hi Guys,

We have been shipping S16 digital snakes for the past few months and have received many questions in regards to setup and configuration. The goal of this thread is to get you up and running with your X32 and S16 stage boxes.

Below are the steps to hook up your X32 and S16, to be a 16 input x 8 output digital system. Your output configuration will give you 6 available monitor mixes plus the two outputs needed for your MAIN L/R.

We will also go over a dual S16 setup for a total of 32 input x 16 output.

Setting up the X32 to connect to (1) S16 Digital Snake:

To set your first 16 inputs from the S16: Press the ROUTING button and set your first 16 inputs to the AES50 A inputs from the HOME tab. (Example: AES50 A1-8, AES50 A9-16,) Your first 16 inputs will now come from the S16.

To set your 6 “Monitor Mix” outputs: Page over to the ANALOG OUT tab and set your first 6 outputs to correlate to the first 6 Mix Buses which can be found under the Output Signal column. (Example: Output 01 is set to MixBus 01 etc.).

To set your MAIN L/R outputs: Scroll to Output 7 under the Analog Output column and set it to “Main L” and set Output 8 to “Main R”.

Check AES50 Routing:: On the AES50(A or B depending on port) page of the ROUTING menu: For Outputs 1-8 choose Out 1-8. For Outs 33-40, set P16 1-8. For Outs 41-48, set P16 9-16.

Connect the CAT5 cable from the AES50 A port on the X32 to the AES50 A port on the S16.

Setting up the S16 Digital Snake

    S16 (Input ch.1-16 / Outputs 1-8)
Hold down the CONFIG button and turn the SELECT/ADJUST rotary knob to the left until there are no LED indicators on the routing display panel, and the digital readout displays as 1-8. Release the CONFIG button.

To confirm that the S16 has been successfully connected to the X32: On the S16 the A Port LED indicator will be green. On the X32, in the connection display window, the “A” row will say “S16”.

You are now ready to use the X32 and S16 as a full digital system.

    Hi John.

Still missing description regarding the P16 output via S16.
Why isn't there a complete user manual for the S16?

How do I set the correct config for this setting:

2 x S16 one on each side of the stage. (connected as described of you above)

    S16 no1 Input 1-16 and S16.1 analog Out = Analog out 1-8 from x32
    S16 no2 Input 17-32 and S16.2 analog out = Analog out 9-16 from X32

    ADAT out on no1 S16 = direct out Ch 1-8 and 9-16
    ADAT out on no2 S16 = direct out Ch 17-24 and 25-32

P16 ultranet on both S16 Ultranet ports shuld contain the 16 direct outs/ mixbus settings I've set on the X32.

    regards
    Stein Inge

    Hi Stein,

When connecting the S16s and setting them up in the way that was described above, the ULTRANET port on both units would output the signal that is assigned to AES50 out 32-48 on the "AES50 out" page of the ROUTING menu. P16 outputs 1-8 and 9-16 are already assigned here by default, but you may want to verify to be sure. Then you should be able to simply assign signals to the P16 using the "P16 out" tab. Now, the ULTRANET ports on both S16s and the X32 should be sending out the 16 signals you assigned.

The setup above will also route the XLR outputs the way you describe. This can also be verified on the "AES50 out" page of the ROUTING menu. For AES50 Outputs 1-16, be sure they are set to "Out 1-8" and "Out 9-16". Then go to the "analog out" tab and route your outputs.

The issue with setting it up the way you describe is that in order to get direct out signals from the S16 mic preamps directly to the ADAT ports, you would need to have the S16 in "splitter mode". In these modes, the S16 changes the ULTRANET routing so that the Local S16 Mic Preamps are routed directly to the P16 channels.

SOLUTION: Run a second CAT 5 cable and connect 1 S16 to the AES50(A) port on the X32 and the other S16 to the AES50(B) port. The main reason for this is to gain an additional set of 48 digital outputs, which we can use to route signal back from the X32 to the ADATs (32 ADAT + 16 Output + 16 P16 = 64 total outputs needed. Each AES50 port supports 48 bi-directional channels).

Be sure that on both S16s, you are connected to the AES50(A) port.
EDIT: *With this configuration, both S16s would be set in Sequence 1 (done by pressing and holding the CONFIG button and rotating the SELECT/ADJUST knob all the way to the left).

On the ROUTING Menu of the X32, setup the following:

    Home Screen:
    Inputs 1-8 = AES50(A) 1-8, Inputs 9-16 = AES50(A) 9-16, Inputs 17-24 = AES50(B) 1-8, Inputs 25-32 = AES50(B) 9-16

    AES50(A) Screen:
    Outputs 1-8 = "Out 1-8", Outputs 9-16 = "Out 9-16", Outputs 17-24 = "AES50(A) 1-8, Outputs 25-32 = "AES50(A) 9-16, Outputs 33-40 = "P16 1-8", Outputs 41-48 = "P16 9-16"

    AES50(B) Screen:
    Outputs 1-8 = "Out 9-16", Outputs 9-16 = "Out 1-8", Outputs 17-24 = "AES50(B) 1-8, Outputs 25-32 = "AES50(B) 9-16, Outputs 33-40 = "P16 1-8", Outputs 41-48 = "P16 9-16"

    Hope it helps!

    Hi Pat,

How to set them up depends on which way you want to connect and use the three S16s.

You can cascade them with Cat 5/6 cable via the X32's AES50 A port, to work as one 48-channel stagebox, as follows.

    X32 AES50 A > S16-1 AES50 A
    S16-1 AES50 B > S16-2 AES50 A
    S16-2 AES50 B > S16-3 AES50 A

    X32>SETUP>CONFIG>SYNCHRONIZATION: LOCAL

S16-1- Press & hold CONFIG. Turn encoder completely left so just 1-8 is displayed & no LEDs are lit. Release CONFIG.
S16-2- Press & hold CONFIG. Turn encoder as before & one click to the right so 9-16 is displayed & OUT+8 is lit. Release CONFIG.
S16-3- Press & hold CONFIG. Turn encoder as before & two clicks to the right so 17.24 is displayed & OUT+16 is lit. Release CONFIG.

You now have the S16 configured as 48 inputs and 24 outputs which you can then assign to the outputs of your choice.

    X32>
    ROUTING> for inputs 1-32 select AES50 A 1-X as the input source.
ROUTING>AES50 A> Specify the sources of the AES50 outputs to be passed to the analog outs of the S16.

    John,
I am new to the X32, but not digital snakes. I have followed your instructions on the simple X32 with a single S16. No matter what I do I cannot get any output from the S16 XLR ports. I have the correct Mode setting with Green indicators and the console is set up as instructed. Nothing comes out of the stage box. The inputs all work just fine. ???

    Dear Thomas,

Perhaps the problem is within your X32's routing?

Please verify you have configured the AES50 A outputs in the ROUTING section as follows:

    ROUTING>
    AES50 A OUTPUT 1-8 = OUT 1-8
    AES50 A OUTPUT 9-16 = OUT 9-16

If you are still having difficulty please send me a PM with your email address, so we can set about exchanging show files to narrow down where the issue is.

I have a similar issue to Thomas, except my setup involves 2 S16's. The first S16 is setup for inputs 1-16 and outputs 1-8 and works perfectly. The second S16 is setup for inputs 17-32 and outputs 9-16 and the inputs work fine, but not the outputs. I have tried changing routing in the X32 console many different ways. I can route an output to the first S16 and it works fine. I have tried using the second S16 by itself (with the same settings as the first S16) to see if there was a problem connecting the two and I get no output this way either. Any help would be appreciated.
