Sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your PMP1000. This may be something that is not quite right with your mixer.
Just to be sure, please tell us:
1. How many speakers are connected and to where.
2. The impedance, in OHMS of each speaker.
3. the position of the AMP MODE switch, found in the upper right part of your PMP1000.

Hi Andy,
Please excuse the late reply.
It is ok to use the 4 ohm speakers as long as the PMP1000 is not in BRIDGED mode. Then the minimum impedance should not be below 8 ohms, or damage will result.
The gain on your PMP1000 needs to be nearly all of the way up for most mics. All of the gain is at the end of the turn of the knob. Now you shouldn't have to turn the final gain stage up as much.
