Desk sharing with X32 and S16

A good and clean explanation of how to build the following setup with the digi berry's would be great:

    1x X32 : FOH Console
    1x X32 : MON Console
    1/2/.. x S16 digital snakes

The idea would be that the monitor console is the gain master and that the FOH console only has digital trim available, which should of course be more than plenty.

    Dear Jeroen,

    One way to do this:
    - When using 2 X32s together as you described, the console that has the Mics physically connected to it is the one controlling the gain (in your scenario, this would be the monitor console).
    - The FOH console would have a digital trim of + or - 12dB.
    - To assign the FOH Main Output to the outputs on the Monitor desk takes a few steps.

    On the FOH Console:
    - On the ROUTING menu, go to the "analog out" tab. Assign your Main LR to Out 1+2.
    - Tab over to the "AES50" tab (use A or B depending which AES50 port you are using on the FOH console)
    - Route "Out 1-8" to Outputs 1-8.

    On the Monitor Console:
    - First you need to bring the signal in from the AES50 stream before it can be re-routed to the console's outputs.
    - Go to the "home" screen of the ROUTING menu.
    - The last column will allow you to bring AES50 into Aux 1-4.
    - Now, tab over to the "analog out" page.
    - Chose the outputs you wish to use for Mains, and assign them to DirOut Aux 1 and DirOut Aux 2.
    - On this same page, you can assign the mix busses from your MON console to the appropriate outputs.
I am checking with our development team if we can add the ability to directly assign an AES50 channel to a physical analog output.

    Hope it helps!

    Jeroen,

Here is how you go about routing the S16's with the X32. There are three aspects of setting this up:

Physical Connections: Connect from AES50 port on X32 to AES50(A) input on first S16. Connect from AES50(B) port on first S16 to AES50(A) port on second S16.

    Setting up X32:
Look at the box on the upper right side of screen. All boxes here should be green, indicating sync. To change sync settings, go to the global page of the SETUP menu. I have had success using the "local" option, which makes the X32 the master. In this scenario, you will need to make sure your S16s are both set to external clock, described below.

Now, go to the home page of the ROUTING menu, choose AES50(A or B, depending on the port you are using on your X32) for all 32 inputs: Inputs 1-8 set to AES50(A or B) 1-8, Inputs 9-16 set to AES50(A or B) 9-16, and so on.

You should now be all set to control head amp gain from the X32 and use the S16 for inputs.

    Setting up S16:
The lights on the S16s are indicating what mode it is in. The table on page 19 of the Quick Start Guide explains what mode is indicated by which lights. Modes can change whether a unit is Master or Slave, What AES50 channels feed the ADAT, and other options. I had success slaving to the X32 on both boxes, which would be the first setting in this table.

    Hello Chris,

Thank you already for your extensive explanation.

The thing is, when using 2 desks I would always use S16's as mic inputs. So there would be no mics physically attached to any console (except for a talkback maybe).
I recon both would need to be setup as described below right, but how is it determined which console is the "master" console, purely by setting the clock master ?

    Hi Jeroen,
If by "Master" console you are referring to which console controls the gains on the S16s:
This is determined by whichever console is plugged into the AES50(A) Port on the first S16.

    For your scenario:
Connect AES50(A) on the MON console to the AES50(A) on the first S16 (Now the MON console will control gain)
Connect AES50(B) from first S16 to AES50(A) on second S16
Connect AES50(B) from second S16 to AES50(A or B) on the FOH console

For sync, setup one of the X32's sync to "Local" (Master) as Chris described above and set the other X32 to receive clock from AES50 (A or B depending on which port you are using). Hope it helps!

Just to be sure I understand... It is possible to have 2 X32's running or tied together, one as FOH and one as Monitor mix desk? (I'm not involving any S16's here) just simply 2 X32's tied together with one or 2 CAT5 cables. AES50 A and/or B.
I understand that only one desk will have HeadAmp control but that's OK.

Meaning that now I have a digital snake to and from FOH. I can get all the inputs from stage routing thru the MONintor desk to FOH (via CAT5) and Sending a few outputs from the FOH again down thru the CAT5 to the MON desk and out the MON desk feeding only my Mains L & R Front Fills and Subwoofers. Or possibly a talk back mic to MON world?

If so that just means the X32 with it's included stuff just saved me even more money. No need to buy a digital snake. Just some good grade CAT5e cable?

    Hi Steve,

Very interesting question. I'd like to know the answer as well. If one X32 is setup as master and the other as slave, would the master X32 see the slave X32 as a glorified S16? If so, the routing would be straight forward.

    Hi Guy's.
I'm kind of having the same question. I would like to have one X32 FOH and then have the same signals sent to another X32 in a studio environment in another room. It's for educational purposes in a school. Is it possible without a microphone splitter and a double set up of S16's

    Hi Steve/Paul,

Q)It is possible to have 2 X32's running or tied together, one as FOH and one as Monitor mix desk?

    A) Yes. Connect MON and FOH together on AES50 A. Sync - MON set to LOCAL, FOH set to AES50 A.

    Q) Can I get all the inputs from stage routing thru the MONintor desk to FOH (via CAT5)?

    A) Yes. MON - INPUTS 1-32 set to LOCAL 1-32, AES50 A OUTPUT routing tab set to LOCAL 1-32. FOH - INPUTS 1-32 set to AES50 A 1-32.

    Q) Can I send a few outputs from the FOH again down thru the CAT5 to the MON desk and out the MON desk feeding only my Mains L & R Front Fills and Subwoofers. Or possibly a talk back mic to MON world?

    A) Yes. The best way to do this would be to use the AUX IN 1-4 and analog outs of the MON console.

FOH - Route the relevant output signals to AES50 A OUTPUTS 1-8 via the output buses most convenient for your setup (Analog out, Aux1-6/mon, P16 out). MON - In the ROUTING>HOME tab, set AUX IN 1-4 to AES50 A 1-4. In the ANALOG OUT tab, specify which outputs to use. Set the pertaining output signal/s to DirOut Aux-x. Open the relevant AUX faders on the AUX/FX RTN layer.

    Kind Regards,

    Thanks Fiona,

Every day we learn new amazing features and routing capabilities built into the X32 line of product. Thank you for answering all our questions so clearly and in detail.

Unfortunately the documentation is sorely lagging behind. Case in point - the X32 manual. Not only is it out of date due to the multiple firmware updates, parts of it are misleading. Could you please get that manual brought up to date soon? I have printed the manuals of every piece of gear in my rig and put into a binder. There have been a number of occasions that I have had to refer to one of them during a gig.
