X32 and Outboard Gear?

I'm trying to get a handle on patching in my 1176 Outboard Compressor, into the X32's Stereo Buss. I understand how to patch it into individual channels, but but I'd like to strap it across the stereo buss and then be able to bounce that onto a couple of tracks in Logic Pro, via the digital routing capabilities of the X32.

Has anyone tried this and found a soulution?

Dear Duane,

Yes you can do this. Connect your tasty outboard compressor of choice to AUX inputs and outputs 1 and 2.

Press the ROUTING button to go to the routing menu, then go to the AUX tab. Select insert for the AUX channels.

Press the HOME button to get out of the ROUTING menu. Select the main bus, and go to the Config tab. Here you can select AUX 1. When you select Aux 1 it automatically selects AUX 2 for the right channel. You can confirm signal is coming in and out where you expect it, by going to the METERS page.

Hey Duane,

Also, you can bounce your main mix back into Logic to record the LR mix. Go to the ROUTING menu, CARD OUT tab. Here you can select what is routed back into the computer. The LR defaults to Analog Output 15 and 16, so you can select Out 9-16 for the Expansion Card Output 9-16. Then assign channels 15 and 16 to a stereo channel in Logic and record it!

A better solution would be to use an 1176 plugin, which, unlike the hardware version, would allow you the use of as many 1176's as your DAW can handle, not degrade the frequency reqponse or add noise into the system.

There are many options to choose from for reasonable price. I have used most of them, and the only difference you will hear is a better result from the plugin.

Awesome! That worked! I did have to set the X32 Aux Insert point to Pre, so that I could clearly hear and know the effect of the outboard compressor and eq's. On Post, you hear a blend of the un-processed and processed signal. Very simple and direct instructions, that took virtually no time - to get going!

Thanks a lot, HumHead - but I prefer the noise and all of the other real life harmonics that come with using a physical piece of gear. I do have a tons of awesome plug-ins, many 1176 emulations included - but even as groovy as they are, there are some intangible things going on with physical hardware, that is still more pleasing to my ears.

A) Are the reverbs in the 2496 good enough to warrant the effort
B) How would I connect it?

Please excuse this very late reply:


A) There are some great presets in it, and it is easy to edit with all of its knobs and encoders. The FX inside the X32 seem like more than enough for most situations.

B) 1. Press the ROUTE button, page right to the AUX OUT screen, adjust the first and fourth encoders to tie one of your 1/4" jacks ( on the back of your console) such as AUX OUT 1 to a mix bus, like mixbus2.

2. Connect from AUX OUT 1 to the LEFT INPUT of your REV2496.

3. Connect the OUTPUT of your REV2496 to AUX INPUTS 1 on your X32. Press the AUX IN/FX/USB BUTTON.Make sure the STEREO button is lit.
4. Move the AUX 1 fader to 0dB
