Matrix usage

One area that I am just not sure what to do with is the Matrix section on the mtx 1-6 layer.

1. How do you use them? How do you route signal to it and then where does it go? On my old analog mixer the matrix section had its own output ports...so I am not really sure where they fit in the mix signal flow and this leads me to question 2...

2. Why would I use them over a mixbus? What is their purpose?

My setup is a typical band set (drums, acoustic guitar, electrica guitar, bass, keys, 1-2 vocalists). My current setup for the outputs:

Mixbus 1-4 = floor wedges
Mixbus 5-6 = unused (future plans to feed another room or add more wedges)
Mixbus 7 = all drum inputs - this feeds P16 system
Mixbus 8 = all FX returns - this feeds P16 system
Mixbus 9-10 = feeds USB recorder and assisted listening devices
Mixbus 11-12 = all my aux sources (cd, ipod, etc) - feeds P16 system
Mixbus 13-16 = FX sends

Where and why would a matrix fit into this? Am I doing this wrong?

Hi Jared,
A Matrix mix can be fed from any of your 16 Mix Busses or your Main LRC Mixes, but cannot be fed from input channels like mix busses.
If you are using subgroups, you can feed these to Matrix mixes to create an alternate mix quickly. This is great for when you need to create a mix quickly to feed an overflow room or video feed. In that scenario one might create separate subgroups for all vocals and all music, and then they could blend these subgroups differently in each Matrix. This would allow the video feed or overflow room feed to have a different vocal/music mix than the audience.

In your application: Depending on your needs, perhaps you would want to feed your USB Recorder / Assisted Listening devices from a Matrix. Then you could use your empty Mix 5-6 and 9-10 to create the subgroups as I described above. You can then build your USB Recorder mix on a pair of Matrix mixes and use other Matrix mixes for your feed to another room.

It sounds like you are doing just fine without using the Matrix Mixes for now, but I hope this clarifies them some for you.

Another simpler example of using a Matrix would be sending your Main LR mix to a number of Matrix mixes and using the individual processing and fader on that Matrix to control different speakers. With the new firmware 1.10, you can even use the Matrix parametric EQ to apply a crossover.

If you are using the Matrix mixes, you need to assign them to an output via the ROUTING menu. Navigate to the "analog out" tab, chose an output, and assign the Matrix you wish to use.
