Using a PMP6000 with Active FOH Speakers

    Hi All,

I am a newbie to the group. I stumbled upon this forum quite by accident as I was searching for some possible answers to a few questions. This looks like it might be the right place.

I belong to a small church and I "volunteered for" (was appointed to) my "job" when the former sound guy decided to leave. Anyway, I have been trying to upgrade some of our archaic equipment. Originally I replaced our undersized powered mixer with a PMP6000. It seemed to have the best price/performance.

Shortly afterward I discovered it would also be best to replace our FOH speakers. I had originally decided upon the B212XL but was persuaded by the retailer "product specialist" to go with the B212D for the extra power at not much more cost.

My questions to them and now you are:

    1. Can the active mains (pair) be connected to a powered mixer? (Note: I also have a pair of passive stage monitors.)
    2. If so, in stereo or MON1/MON?
    3. Are there any cable gauge considerations? My longest run is 100ft?
    4. Speakon>XLR or >1/4" TS? or TRS? (Am assuming MON1/MON and therefore mains and monitors will be daisy chained.

Unfortunately I have a pretty tight implementation schedule so I would appreciate all responses. Oh, and of course the budget is non-existent now.

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
You can use the PMP6000 with Active Speakers, but not using the Speakon outputs on the back as these are powered outputs.
You will want to use the 1/4" outputs on the surface of the PMP6000 labeled Main Outs 1.
Since the Stereo / MON switch is only pertaining to the Amp mode for the Powered Outputs, select the Main 1 / MON option to get your monitor signal to the powered outputs. Your main speakers (B212Ds) can still be connected in stereo since they are not fed from the power amp. The passive monitors need to be connected separately with speakon.

You will need to run 3 lines for this configuration. 2 1/4" for Main LR and one speakon for monitors.

The signal coming from the Main 1 Outs is a line-level signal that should be fine traveling the distance of 100ft.

    Hope it helps!

**OK. I understand this. Is there a concern with wire gauge? I've seen cables ranging from 22 gauge up to 12 gauge. I know the larger the gauge (lower number) provides better signal quality but is there a minimum gauge?

**Should I run TRS cable or is TS satisfactory?

    **Is there a preference between 1/4" > 1/4" cable or 1/4" > XLR cable?

**Will Using Main Out 1 still give me full control using the sliders?

    >>The passive monitors need to be connected separately with speakon.

**You mention using Speakon for the monitors. I presume I will be connecting the passive monitors to the Main Out Speakon connectors since, if I recall correctly, the MON Outs are 1/4''?

    >>You will need to run 3 lines for this configuration. 2 1/4" for Main LR and one speakon for monitors.

    **OK, great.

    Thanks again,
    Steve
